Oprah to Receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2018 Golden Globes

Oprah is making Golden Globe history as the first black woman to be given the Cecil B. DeMille Award at next year’s ceremony, an honor first presented in 1952 at the ninth annual Golden Globes.

On Wednesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the news, noting that each year, the award is given to a "talented individual who has made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment.” Winfrey has "celebrated strong female characters on and off screen, and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades,” HFPA president Meher Tatna said in a statement.

The TV talk show host, actress and business mogul has been nominated twice in the past for her key roles in iconic films The Color Purple and The Great Debaters. More recently, she starred in The Butler, Selma and Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, set to release in March 2018.

Previous recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award include Audrey Hepburn, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Barbra Streisand, Lucille Ball, Meryl Streep, Sidney Poitier and Robin Williams.

The 75th annual Golden Globes will air live Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
