Alicia Keys delivered a powerful message at the 2020 BET Awards.
The R&B songstress delivered an impassioned interpretation of her new single, âPerfect Way to Die,â during tonightâs annual awards ceremony. On Sunday (June 28), Keys took her performance outdoors with a poignant homage to the myriad Black civilians who lost their lives to racial injustice in recent years.
Keys, wearing an all-black outfit while performing at her piano in the open street, pushed through the emotionally-charged presentation in which she paid remembrance to the late George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, and Michael Brown.
âAnother dream lost/ Another king and queen lost/ Another broken promise they refuse to make right/ Oh, another night to live in fear/ Oh, another night that you're not here/ Another reason to get out there and fight,â Keys belts in the emotional anthem as a Memoriam display show images of the departed in the distance.
Speaking about âPerfect Way to Die,â the pianist explained on Twitter: âI have felt called by music like I never have before.âŁâŁ I have been following its lead.âŁâŁ It has led me to the song âA Perfect Way to Dieâ. The song title is so powerful and heartbreaking because WE are heartbroken by so many who have died unjustly.âŁâŁâ
âOf course, there is NO perfect way to die,â she added. âThat phrase doesnât even make sense.âŁâŁ Just like it doesnât make sense that there are so many innocent lives that should not have been taken from us due to the destructive culture of police violence.â
