The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced a temporary closure of Interstate 81 northbound in Syracuse. Starting tonight (April 2), the section between Exit 16A and the on-ramp from Interstate 481 southbound will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. This closure will continue on weeknights through Saturday (April 5) to facilitate paving work as part of the ongoing Interstate 81 Viaduct Project.

Motorists are advised to follow the signed detour, which directs traffic to Interstate 481 north, then to Exit 1 (Brighton Ave/Rock Cut Rd), west on Rock Cut Road, north on Brighton Avenue, and back to I-81 northbound. According to the NYSDOT, construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. Drivers should exercise caution in the work zone and adhere to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers.

The NYSDOT reminds drivers that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones, and multiple speeding violations could lead to a suspended driver's license. For more updates, follow the I-81 Viaduct Project on social media or visit the project's website.
