An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for Central New York, including Onondaga County, until 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, June 24). Syracuse experienced record-breaking temperatures yesterday, reaching 94 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 92 degrees set in 1975. Similar high temperatures are expected today, with the heat index making it feel even hotter.

To help residents cope with the heat, the City of Syracuse has extended hours at cooling centers and pools. According to Syr.gov, the Cecile Community Center and the Magnarelli Community Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Wednesday. City pools at Upper Onondaga Park, Kirk Park, McKinley Park, Burnet Park, Lincoln Park, and Wilson Park are also open, with some opening earlier than usual.

The National Weather Service has warned that the heat wave could make temperatures feel like 105 degrees in the coming days. Governor Hochul has declared a State of Emergency for Onondaga County and nine other counties in New York. Cooling centers are available across the region, and a list of locations can be found on the New York State Health Department's website.

The heat wave follows severe storms that caused widespread power outages. As reported by Syracuse.com, more than 8,000 residents in Central New York are still without power, with restoration efforts underway. The state Health Department has compiled a list of cooling centers to assist those affected by the heat.

Mayor Ben Walsh emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and checking on friends and relatives during this extreme weather. He stated, "The safety of Syracuse residents is our top priority."
