Central New York is experiencing a slight reprieve from the recent heat wave that has gripped the region. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s today, a drop from the record high of 95 degrees recorded in Syracuse on Tuesday (June 24). The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, made it feel like 101 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

In response to the extreme heat, the Syracuse City School District has implemented half-days for schools without air conditioning today and tomorrow. High schools, which are equipped with air conditioning, will continue with their regular schedules. The district had closed most schools on Tuesday due to the heat, as reported by Syracuse.com.

The heat wave has been fueled by air flowing from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing high humidity to the region. A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. today, with the heat index possibly exceeding 100 degrees in parts of Onondaga County and the Southern Tier. Relief is expected as a cold front moves in from the north, potentially bringing cooler temperatures later in the week, according to NewYorkUpstate.com.
