Central New York is bracing for its first lake effect snow event of the season, as winter weather alerts have been issued across the region. The National Weather Service has placed Wayne, Oswego, and northern Cayuga County under a winter storm watch from Monday (November 10) evening through Tuesday (November 11) evening.

According to Syracuse.com, up to eight inches of snow could fall in lake effect zones by early Wednesday (November 12), with Syracuse potentially seeing three to six inches. A blast of cold air, more typical of December, is expected to sweep across the Great Lakes, bringing wind chill temperatures into the teens.

WSYR-TV reports that the most intense snow bands are expected Monday night into Tuesday morning, possibly affecting the Tuesday morning commute. However, with Veterans Day being observed, traffic may be lighter than usual.

Governor Kathy Hochul has directed state agencies to prepare for the snowfall, emphasizing the importance of safety as the cold front moves in. The Governor's Office notes that snow totals could reach up to 12 inches in areas like the Tug Hill Plateau, with 'feels like' temperatures dropping to the low-to-mid teens.

Residents are advised to prepare for the cold and snow by ensuring they have necessary supplies and checking the functionality of snow removal equipment. The state is also encouraging people to stay off the roads during the worst of the weather to help keep communities safe.
