Syracuse is bracing for a significant winter storm today (Friday, December 26), with snow expected to begin this afternoon and continue into the evening. According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for all local counties until early Saturday morning. The advisory warns of mixed precipitation, with snow and sleet accumulations ranging from two to five inches, and ice accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch.
Residents should prepare for slippery road conditions, especially during the evening commute. The National Weather Service advises slowing down and using caution while driving, as hazardous conditions could impact travel. In some areas, snow accumulations could reach up to six inches before the system moves out.
Additionally, a winter storm warning is in place for Western Albany, Western Columbia, and Schoharie County, where total snow accumulations between five and nine inches are expected. The snow is anticipated to be moderate to heavy overnight, with snowfall rates of an inch per hour possible at times.
Drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling and to keep essential winter supplies in their vehicles, such as a flashlight, food, and water. If you must travel, be aware of snow plows and allow them ample room to pass. The storm is expected to taper off Saturday morning, with scattered snow showers and flurries.
