As Tax Day arrives, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding taxpayers of important deadlines and resources. The deadline to file tax returns and pay any taxes owed is midnight on Wednesday (April 15). Taxpayers planning to mail their returns must ensure their envelopes are postmarked by today to avoid penalties or interest.
The department encourages the use of e-filing services, which are considered safer, faster, and more efficient than mailing paper returns. According to PIX11, Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller emphasized the availability of resources on the department's website, including tax filing tips and free e-filing options.
For those unable to complete their returns by the deadline, an extension can be requested. However, as noted by BKReader, an extension only provides more time to file, not to pay. Taxpayers must pay the full estimated tax liability by the deadline to avoid additional charges.
The department has also addressed concerns about refund delays. Despite social media complaints, NEWS10 ABC reports that the department has issued 3.4 million refunds worth $3.6 billion this season. Any delays are attributed to missing information or discrepancies in returns.
To prevent fraud, taxpayers are advised to verify unexpected communications from tax officials and ensure their tax preparers are credentialed. The department's website offers daily tracking for refund statuses and recommends electronic filing to avoid delays.
