Chicago Politics Changed 40 Years Ago Today

It was 40 years ago today that Harold Washington announced he was running for mayor for the city of Chicago. He was elected in April of 1983 and served as Chicago's first black mayor until his death in November of 1987.

As a kid I remember standing in the long lines to pay respect to Mayor Washington during his public viewing downtown. Although at that time I didn't really pay that much attention to the significance of him being in office, I definitely understand what a major impact he has had on this city during his somewhat brief time in office. Some of that impact still exists today.
